Maintaining a Positive Mindset to Support Your Wellness Journey
Multiple research studies show that the way you think about things can affect medical outcomes and overall wellness. More specifically, a positive mindset really does help you stay well. Here are some examples:
- Many argue people with a family history of heart disease but also had a positive outlook were one-third less likely to have a cardiovascular event within five to 25 years than those with a positive outlook.
- There's a link between positive thinking and outcomes for a number of conditions, including stroke, traumatic brain injury and brain tumors.
- Positive thinkers tend to fare better in stressful situations. They're more equipped to handle challenges and less likely to let anxiety and worry take over.
- Researchers have found that the more positive thoughts a person has, the better that person's immunity to diseases.
- One study shows that people who were exposed to the flu and common cold were less likely to get sick and experienced fewer symptoms when they had a positive outlook.
- A study showed that people over age 50 who had more positive thoughts lived longer and had less stress-related inflammation in their bodies.
How can you cultivate a positive mindset in a world that often encourages pessimism? Here are some ideas:
- Smile. Try on a smile for a change. Research from the University of Kansas shows that smiling - even if it's not genuine - reduces heart rate and blood pressure during stressful situations. Try a fake smile if you must, but we suggest watching something funny to get your smile on, or telling a few jokes.
- Reframe. When facing a stressful situation, try reframing your mindset. Stuck in a long line at the grocery store? Appreciate the time to practice mindful breathing or catch up on texts. Facing a long recovery? Use it to binge-watch your favorite shows. You get the idea.
- Focus on positive thoughts. You can train your brain to think positive thoughts. Try writing down things you're thankful for or meditating on positive outlooks. It works!
- Nix black-and-white thinking. When you start thinking of things as either "good" or "bad," you create a situation where if things aren't perfect (and they rarely are), they're automatically bad. That's setting yourself up for disappointment. Try being more flexible in your thinking. One way to do this is to gather diverse viewpoints from others.
-
Build resilience. Resilience is the ability to adapt to new situations and move forward in the face of adversity. You can build resilience by maintaining good relationships with friends and family members, developing coping mechanisms for stress (hint: exercise is a great one), accepting change as part of life and taking action to change what you can change while accepting what you can't change.
