Choosing the Right Shampoo and Conditioner for Your Hair
Are you looking for the right shampoo or conditioner for your hair? Remember that not all products are good for all hair or scalp types. Some treat specific problems like thinning hair, and some are best suited for dry or oily hair, for example. There are a couple of ways to choose the best shampoo and conditioner, so let's get started.
Shampoo Versus Conditioner
Remember that shampoo is designed to clean your scalp and roots, and treat any issues there. Conditioner, on the other hand, is for the ends of your hair. So you may, for example, have an oily scalp but dry ends. In that case, you would use a shampoo designed for oily hair and then apply a moisturizing conditioner.
Hair Type
Have you seen shampoos specially designed for curly hair, thick hair or fine hair? There are four basic types of hair, and some shampoos cater to those types. Straight hair is the most common, and you will know if you have this because it doesn't curl or wave if you leave it to dry on its own. There's also wavy, curly and kinky or coiled. Specific conditioners and shampoos help manage these hair types, so look for labels that identify them. For example, products for straight hair typically contain agents meant to smooth. Products for curly or wavy hair are designed to reduce frizz, so they contain extra moisturizers.
Hair Thickness
Whether your hair is fine or thick, you probably want the opposite. The grass is always greener, right? To that end, shampoo and conditioner for fine hair tend to have elements that help increase volume without weighing hair down. Shampoo and conditioner for thick hair will have elements that add moisture and shine.
Scalp Type
Your scalp type is important in identifying the right shampoo and conditioner for your hair. Find your scalp type by washing your hair and seeing how it feels. If it feels tight or itchy, it's probably a dry scalp. An oily scalp will appear shiny after washing, without applying any additional products. You may also have a combination scalp, in which your scalp feels normal after washing, but gets oily two or three days after shampooing.
If you have an oily scalp, you'll want to avoid highly moisturizing shampoos and stick with shampoos designed to control excess oil production. Look for shampoos that say they are balanced, strengthening, clarifying or volumizing, and avoid anything that's designed to hydrate or smooth.
A good choice would be Miracle Hair's Detox + Clarifying Deep Cleansing Shampoo.
Conversely, if you have a dry scalp, reach for moisturizing shampoos. Avoid strengthening and volumizing shampoos in this case, and look for labels that promote moisture, smoothing and hydration.

Determining What Works
Sometimes, even with all of the advice given above, you still aren't sure what will work for your hair. After all, we're all different and react to products differently. Here are some ideas for determining what works:
- Check ingredients. Look for ingredients that work for your hair or scalp type, or for your particular condition. Miracle Hair, of course, recommends all-natural ingredients, which are best for your skin and hair.
- Do a patch test. Try out your shampoo or conditioner on a small section of your hair and see how it feels after drying. You'll know if it's not right, because your hair may feel dry or tangled, or simply look dull.
-
Watch the results over time. Give the new shampoo and conditioner three to four washes, and watch the results over time. Sometimes, it takes a while to see how a product affects your hair.
